It was 2012, when Mike and Maryann Kuntz, the owners of An Octopus's Garden, first asked me to be the featured artist for Earth Day. Because my work is created primarily from scrap metal and other used materials, it seemed like a good fit. That was twelve years ago. Since then, I have continued as their Earth Day artist every year.
Growing up, I was fortunate that wherever we lived, Maryland, Pennsylvania, or New Jersey, there was always open space and woods for me to explore. This instilled in me a curiosity and awe for nature. I learned that all things are interwoven and when one part is hurt, it affects the whole.
The Earth seems so large and indestructible. It isn't. It is a myriad of ecosystems that have taken eons to come into a balance that benefits all of it's inhabitants. That balance is in serious jeopardy. We must take better care of this place.
I don't mean to preach. Its just that I want my grandchildren to have the chance to enjoy the same world that I did.
Now back to An Octopus's Garden. I will once again be the featured artist. This year, however will be my last. It's time to step aside and give someone else a chance. It's been a privilege and joy to do this for the last twelve years. I'm sure my successor will carry on and bring awareness to this beautiful planet of ours.
